From 18 to 22 March 2020, the Japan-Square film festival will present a range of highlights from Japanese cinema at the Studio Skoop cinema in Ghent. As always, Yamagata Europe is a proud sponsor of the festival and will be glad to welcome its customers for the opening movie.

“We have always had a soft spot for Japanese cinema, and we are proud to sponsor Japan Square again for the 11th edition,” says Geert Benoit (Managing Director, Yamagata Europe). “This festival offers a refreshing look at Japanese culture and a varied program of film and entertainment.”

The best of Japanese cinema

The Japan Square 2020 program is quite diverse. From the charming opening movie Talking the Pictures to the 2018 horror flick It comes, it is clear that Japan Square 2020 offers something for everyone.

Another highlight of the festival is the guest appearance of Japan’s most prolific and written-about female pink film director, Sachi Hamano, who will be attending the screening of The Landlady on Saturday. Hamano has directed more than 300 films and made it her mission to present women from a woman’s perspective. This will be a unique opportunity to meet this grande dame of Japanese cinema, and maybe also to ask her a few questions.

We also look forward to seeing the classic The Ballad of Narayama, which will be introduced by Japan connoisseur Luk Van Haute, and preceded by a talk by Walter Vander Cruysse, owner of Studio Skoop.
